Understand the Role

Don't just skim the job description. Read it thoroughly and think about how your skills, experience and achievements align with what the employer is looking for.

Research the Company

Spend time exploring the company's website, LinkedIn page, recent news and social media channels. Understanding their values, goals and challenges will help you tailor your answers and ask more meaningful questions.

The goal isn't to recite facts. It's to demonstrate genuine interest and show how you can add value.

Many employers use competency-based questions such as:

"Tell me about a time when..."

These questions are designed to understand how you've handled situations in the workplace.

A great way to structure your answers is using the STAR method:

Situation – Briefly explain the scenario.
Task – Outline what needed to be achieved.
Action – Explain what you personally did.
Result – Share the outcome and any lessons learned.

Before your interview, prepare a few examples covering:

Problem solving
Working under pressure
Managing conflict
Delivering results
Teamwork and collaboration

Having examples ready will help you answer confidently and clearly.

Go beyond the basics.

Look into:

For more corporate environments, business formal or business casual attire is usually appropriate. For creative or less formal businesses, smart and professional is often sufficient.

For video interviews:

Avoid busy patterns
Keep accessories minimal
Choose colours that contrast with your background
Ensure you're well-lit and clearly visible

The aim is for the interviewer to focus on you, not your outfit.

Face-to-Face Interviews

Arrive 10–15 minutes early
Allow extra time for traffic, parking and reception check-in
Bring a copy of your CV and any relevant notes
Maintain eye contact and positive body language
Treat the interview as a conversation, not an interrogation

Virtual Interviews

Test your camera, microphone and internet connection beforehand
Ensure your device is fully charged
Choose a quiet location with minimal distractions
Use a tidy, professional background
Look at the camera when speaking
Keep a few bullet-point notes nearby if needed

The end of the interview is your opportunity to reinforce your interest.

Consider asking questions such as:

"What does success look like after six months?"
"How would you describe the team culture?"
"What are the next steps in the process?"

If you're genuinely interested in the opportunity, say so.
